Why you should think about becoming a better student...

  • For a much better income

  • To be more likely to have reliable, full-time work

  • To become more likely to have enjoyable work–a career vs a job

  • To enjoy better health and longevity

  • To improve self-esteem and self-efficacy

  • To have more options in life and career

  • To improve your connections

The long version:

If you are not already aware, having good grades in college and university significantly increases your chances of financial success, a stable income, a career (more than just a job), better health, and even improved self-esteem.  These outcomes are all based on the increasing likelihood that good grades will increase your chances of completing diploma and degree programs, and even being eligible for advanced and professional degrees, such as in law, medicine, engineering and accounting, all of which improve your income stream and your options in life.

There has always been a strong consensus on the values of getting a college education.  First, for those in the 25 to 34-year-old category, not only are you more likely to have full-time work with a bachelor’s degree than someone who is only high-school (or less) educated, your median income is on average 57% higher.  And if you had a master’s or higher degree, your median income would be a further 19% higher.

Second, while there are many notable dropouts who have become extremely successful –like Apple’s Steve Jobs, Google’s Larry Ellison, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, and Microsoft’s Bill Gates–and others who did not get past high school–like John D. Rochefeller and Henry Ford–they do not constitute proof that college degrees are a waste of time. They are in fact in a clear minority–only about 6% of some 12,000 leaders studied in the USA .  WhenAnd third, and perhaps more surprisingly, you are more likely to live longer than someone who is less educated.

Before you even start dreaming about what kind of career you want to embark upon, ask yourself--honestly--if you really believe in the value of education.

And if you are harbouring any uncertainties about this, consider what has been said about education in general, and post secondary education in particular.  If the following quotes do not resonate with you, then it is unlikely that your ambivalence will get you much more than a mediocre result, and you will be wasting everyone’s time, and especially your own.  But if they do confirm a deeper belief, then maybe it is time for you to embrace your life’s direction and your educational process, like you never have before:
